Making Technology Happen (MTH) describes in detail the techniques used to identify and exploit technology and how to build and manage a technology-intensive company around that technology. It covers such activities as ‘go-to market’ strategy development, general management, investment analysis, organizational development, and competitive market analysis – all from the perspective of a technology-intensive enterprise. It is used by governments and technology transfer professionals across North America, as well as by entrepreneurs and business executives.
Originally published in 1988, MTH is a 165-page book that covers the entire spectrum of technology commercialization from the identification of exploitable technology in publicly funded laboratories, to the creation of new business ventures, to the ongoing management and governance of technology-based firms. It even has a chapter devoted to steps that can be taken by municipalities to create such firms in their areas of jurisdiction. It has been a perennial best seller on the National Business Incubator Association (NBIA) online bookstore. In March 2004, NBIA announced that MTH rated as its most popular small business book over the last six months. The books that NBIA distribute are subjected to a very rigorous approval process; one of its reviewers, Mark Ferri found the business planning section to be the best he’d ever seen.
